Martha mak[es] it okay for Lois just to be Lois, and not to feel like she has to be this other Wonder Woman, or Superwoman, or whatever Lois thinks she has to be. It’s just really sweet. As we’ve said before, whatever makes Clark happy and is good for Clark in the long run is what Martha wants, and I’ve figured it out that Lois is what’s good for Clark.Annette O’Toole

Oh, Clark.

#and in two perfect scenes smallville tells us everything you need to understand about the most important elements of clark kent’s journey and his identity. the cornerstones, if you will: martha and jonathan kent and lois joanne lane. this is not to diminish the importance of other people in his journey: lana, pete, and in the specific context of smallville: lex and chloe—these people are important too. lex especially was set up as a foundational part of clark’s journey at a particular moment in his life, and their first meeting is a shadow mirror of these two, similar but not quite the same and there’s a reason for that obviously. and better people have spoken of it, so i won’t get into it. at the end of the day, superman, clark kent is not defined by his enemies in the way that many heroes and heroines tend to be. he’s not defined by loss either. that’s why he’s pretty unique in the larger pantheon of DC heroes. moving on. so it’s these two relationships right here that rest at the core of his identity - the first, his parents, is the formative. they teach him the values; the principles that gird his mission; they teach him how to use his strength to help others; to be humble; to understand the responsibility he has as an adopted citizen of this earth. they helped to build the foundation of who superman is, who clark kent is. and then there is lois. she grounds him. in smallville we saw this with them in such a literal way from the start and it’s one of my favorite elements of the relationship because lois always treated him like a man. even better, a boy, nothing special - just clark kent, nothing more and nothing less. if there’s ever a risk that he loses his touch with humanity, with himself she brings him down to earth, sometimes with a well-aimed kick when he needs one. if he finds himself lost, it’s lois who brings him back (like can this scene be more literal as a metaphor?). it’s lois, with all her very human flaws and her tenacity, her strength, her compassion and pursuit of justice that reminds him what it is he’s fighting for. it’s lois with her love (and yes, sex goes here too) that allows him to rest, to be nothing more than a man, and gives meaning to clark kent the man and therefore superman the hero. like this is some powerful stuff here and smallville, more than any other medium, has captured it the best. the writers might do dumb things, i can’t deny it, but in this they are 100% flaw-free, they GET IT. it all comes back to clark kent, and it’s what makes clark kent tick that makes superman the better and more inspiring hero. every other medium could learn a lesson or 20 from it. #this is stunning. #actually crying

Did I ever tell you about the first time I saw him?

He came to Metropolis U. to take a Finance course, and he was sitting by a fountain; all denim and flannel, eating an apple… And I asked to borrow his notes. He didn’t know that I was the note-taker for the class… He still doesn’t.

He was so cute. So I asked him for his notes and he just handed over his notebook without even asking my name… And I said: “How can you be so sure that I’ll bring it back?” And he said: “I prefer to believe in people.”

I remember looking at him, completely embarrased because I was thinking the dumbest thing: “God, I hope he marries me…” I still think that. Everyday there’s a part of me that says: “God, I hope he marries me…”
